Choosing Organic Food

Before food became mass-produced to whet the appetite of the hungry public, it were grown on small farms usually tended to by families. During that time, food was produced naturally, and without using chemicals to create standard results.

Today, the appeal of organic foods is gaining popularity. Signs of which include companies joining the organic food-production bandwagon and regulation set up by governments such as the US, the EU and Japan in making sure that the foods sold as organic are indeed organic.

Organic foods, however, are being criticized for being too expensive. Because of this, only affluent members of the society are able to avail of this. This isn’t entirely the case, however, as anyone which the right tools and dedication can grow organic food in his/her own backyard.Here are some basic of growing your organic food:

  • You must of course have a patch of land. This is the most basic requirement in growing organic food. To make sure you have a healthy soil, you have to compost it. Or you could also buy soil prepared for that purpose in gardening shops.
  • Choose what seeds to plant. Doing so would help you produce food that you like in your own backyard. Imagine enjoying your favorite food at a low cost! This can also be a concern when you have a small space to grow your food. Don’t expect to plant a hectare’s worth of pumpkins in a small garden!
  • If you’re concerned about pests, use natural insect repellants. If for example your plant is infested with ants, you can use mint oils to keep them off your plants.
  • If you’re not blessed with a green thumb but want to venture into growing organic food, you might want to take gardening courses. They can provide you with great insight and the skills to make your organic food dreams come true!
